I’m also the Founder and CEO of Advancing Health Equity, which I created to partner with healthcare organizations to dismantle bias and racism in healthcare and to close the gap in racial health inequities. I’m excited about this opportunity to interact with you all. The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed profound racial health inequities as Black, Latinx and Indigenous communities have been the hardest-hit by the pandemic. This is due to multiple factors including lack of access to health care, more likely to be burdened with chronic diseases, more likely to be restricted essential or service worker jobs and more likely to take public transportation. These factors are called the social determinants of health and systemic racism ties all of these factors together. You can make a difference by educating yourselves about how systemic racism influences health outcomes, through practices and policies, like redlining and predatory mortgage lending, and have led to the deep racial health inequities that we see today. An individual’s zip code is a better predictor of health outcomes than their genetic code.
