Photo by @michaelchristopherbrown / This month marks the ten-year anniversary of the Libyan Revolution, which became the First Libyan Civil War, an armed conflict fought between forces loyal to Col. Moammar Gaddafi, then the dictator of Libya, and foreign-supported Libyan militias seeking to oust his government. The conflict was ignited by protests in Benghazi beginning on February 15, 2011, which led to clashes with security forces that fired on the crowd. The protests escalated into a rebellion that spread across the country, eventually toppling the Gaddafi regime. But the conflict did not end: over the past ten years there has been a power struggle among the myriad entities involved in the First Civil War, which eventually led to a Second Libyan Civil War, an ongoing conflict among a number of armed groups. I spent a seven months in Libya in 2011, photographing events throughout the revolution and civil war that culminated in the book Libyan Sugar. In this photograph from the book, Libyans had driven to a checkpoint near the front line in order to watch the fighting, which largely consisted of government shelling of revolutionary positions along a stretch of highway between the towns of Bin Jawad and Sirte.
