In 2015 Nora went into acute liver failure, and a few weeks later had a life-saving liver transplant at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Her liver had deteriorated rapidly, and in a matter of weeks dropped to 5% function. Although the transplant team performed every test available, she never received a diagnosis; a post-operative biopsy was inconclusive. In this photo, you can see her scar, which transplant surgeons call the “Mercedes-Benz” cut.

At the time of her illness, Nora was a healthy 28-year-old without preexisting conditions. She would not have lived if a suitable organ donor had not become available. After a few years of setbacks and multiple hospitalizations, Nora is now a writer; she is currently working on a book and podcast about the experience of being a patient. She also teaches meditation and works to raise awareness about organ donation. As of September 2020, there are 109,000 people on the transplant waiting list in the U.S.; 17 people die each day waiting for an organ transplant.
