The @nypl is the second largest library in the United States, behind The Library of Congress, and is the third in the world. It’s a private institution (non governmental) and independently managed. It’s a non profit organization that is run by both private and public funding. It was established in 1895 containing 55 million books as well as other items. The NYPL name may also be refer to its Main Branch, which is very recognizable by the two lion statues in front named Patience and Fortitude. They are located on each side of the building. The branch was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1965 and designated a New York City Landmark in 1967. It was a nice little read of history when I researched this building.
