Almost 3 million acres of rich Chiquitano forests in eastern Bolivia are protected after recent declarations that created three municipal reserves:

1️⃣ the 2.4 million-acre Bajo Paraguá Municipal Protected Area declared by the municipality of San Ignacio.
2️⃣ the 380,000-acre Concepción Municipal Protected Area created by the Municipality of Concepción.
3️⃣ the 135,000-acre Serranía de San Lorenzo reserve created by the Municipality of San Javier.

This is encouraging news for the wealth of wildlife these areas support, and also for the Chiquitano and Guarasug’we Indigenous groups who live within the areas and depend on the forests for their livelihoods. Together, the areas create a major connectivity corridor of Amazon forest that spans more than 10 million acres, from Noel Kempff Mercado National Park in the east to Rio Blanco y Negro Wildlife Refuge to the west.
