I am deeply indebted, perhaps for life, to Jean-Paul for taking care of all the fine details of my solo exhibition, MURAKAMI EGO, at Al Riwaq Exhibition Hall in Doha, Qatar @qatar_museums , in 2012 (curated by Massimiliano Gioni ). The work coming up for auction is a large scale painting I made in 2013 that depicts demons and arhats. It is part of my Arhat series, and I was motivated to create the body of work in response to the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami that struck the Pacific Ocean side of northern Japan on March 11, 2011. Since childhood, I had always been interested in the mechanism of how religions emerge, and I felt that I was able to witness the origin of such a genesis. That is, I came to understand that a religious narrative of salvation comes to be when a natural disaster of an enormous magnitude strikes. The theme of the Arhat series was such a primitive, religious salvation. I truly put my whole heart and soul into these works, taking up the brush with a sense of mission as an artist; I would say this is a work that marks the pinnacle of the height of my career.」6月20日 15時09分
