Our 1st goal… to qualify for Texas’ premiere swimming invitational, aptly called, “Ponderosa”. That ONE meet that all 15,000 other swimmers in our Texas division fight for a spot at. So, a game plan was made, with periodic milestones & all. Been here before, so Charlie qualified early… in all 6 events. But, it was Porter’s first year, so he strapped on Charlie’s old British racing green Speedo and JUST squeaked by to qualify on his last possible opportunity. But… goal met & one more little note on the refrigerator got a check mark. The 2nd goal… to blast through the morning heats and make it to the “A” finals - a single 8 man heat of the best of the best, run at the end of the day & for all the marbles. More measuring. More managing. More milestones, and BOOM… “A” finals for two sole summer leaguers each fighting against seven year rounders. Goals: CRUSHED. And, mommy got lots of necklaces of hard earned iron for her birthday. The best kind of jewelry in the world.
