Beautiful anecdote.
This scene was mostly improvised as it was a silent sequence in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Pancho, my grandfather improvised this whole moment and made it difficult for the actors to film the scene without breaking character and laughing (he would hand them the keys to lock him up). At the end of the scene you can see Katharine Ross and Robert Redford laughing and going out of frame. The scene was kept like that and only those close to my grandfather know this story.
