Every leader at the huge United Nations conference on climate change known as COP26 says that climate change is an existential threat that needs to be addressed immediately.

For 50 years the remarkable economic progress the world had made had been happening at the expense of the long term livability of the earth.

The exponential increase in carbon emissions from 5 Billion tones of co2 per year in 1950 to 35 BT in 2017 happened concurrently with the global population explosion from 2.5 bln people in 1950 to almost 8 bln people today.

The reminders are all around us every day in extreme weather events, from floods to hurricanes to wildfires and droughts, which throw the economy into a tailspin over and over again, displacing people, destroying homes and businesses and costing billions of dollars each time. And this is all on top of the global pandemic.
