I thought a lot about my film “A Letter to True” as I worked on this new book, “The Golden Retriever Photographic Society,“ and not only because it was also about dogs. We shot and edited that film after 9/11, and dedicated a whole section of it to the enduring, lovable spectacle which is New York City. I wanted to share it with you again this Thanksgiving, because our world doesn’t seem any less frightening or topsy-turvy a place now than it was back then. In spite of the divisions and animosity we witness everywhere, I think there’s something in Blossom Dearie’s song we should try to remember—that the tenderness and empathy we experienced filming on the streets of Manhattan those many years ago is still possible.
