This book is the fifth volume of the Encyclopedia of Flowers, Azuma’s and Shiinoki’s life’s work for more than ten years. Volume V (five) includes work that was produced during the pandemic. While stuck at home, he happened to pick up a book about the origins of traditional Japanese flower arrangement ikebana and therein read about something that would speak to our current times. In the 15th century Kyoto, there was a great famine. So horrible was the magnitude of starvation that it is said even the flow of river was dammed by a mountain of corpses. A monk at a temple gave out warm porridge to those starving, built huts to shelter them, and arranged flowers to cheer their desolate hearts. It was the flowers that the monks arranged that consoled the hearts of the people during the disaster. They has taken inspiration from this episode and his work in this volume are the most compassionate of the series so far.
