While stuck at home, he happened to pick up a book about the origins of traditional Japanese flower arrangement ikebana and therein read about something that would speak to our current times. In the 15th century Kyoto, there was a great famine. So horrible was the magnitude of starvation that it is said even the flow of river was dammed by a mountain of corpses. A monk at a temple gave out warm porridge to those starving, built huts to shelter them, and arranged flowers to cheer their desolate hearts. It was the flowers that the monks arranged that consoled the hearts of the people during the disaster.
