The painting captures an artist’s meticulous brilliance and a father’s tenderness. Based upon a real moment in which Millais saw his daughter exhausted after a children’s party, the picture has a realism that was contemporary and daring in the 1860s, when it was exhibited to great acclaim at the Royal Academy. The work will be offered in British Art: The Jubilee Auction on 29 June.
