I’m thrilled to announce that “Plays Enacted in Print: Shakespeare and Goethe by the French Romantics”, the exhibition I’ve curated for the first time will be held this October at the National Museum of Western Art, Tokyo! Displaying some of the masterpieces from the Romantic prints including Delacroix’s Faust and Hamlet series as well as Chassériau’s Othello suite, the show will focus on the artists’ own interpretations of the dramatic languages and narratives of Shakespeare and Goethe, and the inspirations possibly drawn from contemporary stage productions and the French translations of the plays. This will be the first occasion in the museum’s history where these three series are shown together. Last but not least, we will be also hosting the production of “Hamlet” inspired by Delacroix’s prints, starring a wonderful performers from the Shakespeare Theatre, the renowned company founded by the late Norio Deguchi.
