Franz Kafka said that “A book must be the axe for the frozen sea within us.” Writing it chops the writer up, exposing what’s beneath. And though I would never compare myself with these greats of literature, I can’t help but shout with joy. This is what I did: I wrote the book I needed to read. I found a way to make sense of my life through my stories. I knew I would write my story back when I was still in high school. I also knew I could only do so after my mother died if I were going to be truly honest. The beauty of writing at this time in my life is that I’ve had time to process and grieve so much. I can now tell my story fairly and without resentment —but with compassion, forgiveness, and love. The rub is I’d give anything to share this book with my mother. I know she’s aware of it in her own way. But I’d love to see her face light up at the idea that I wrote a whole book —288 pages!— about our relationship. She’d be so proud—of the good, the bad, and even the ugly. It took many years to put pen to paper. When I finally started writing I constantly doubted myself and had so many second thoughts. One day I asked my therapist why I should tell my story. “Everyone has struggled in some way. What makes my story more important than anyone else’s?” “If you remove the ‘more’ from your question, you will have your answer,” he said. My story is no more important than anyone else’s, but it’s important nonetheless. And so here we are. And this is the cover. This is a surreal moment for me and one I hope you’ll share with me.
