As a budding photographer in my native Germany, one of my most treasured assignments for the weekly supplement ZEITmagazin was capturing the essence of "Iron Pairs" – a German term for couples who had been married for 65 years and counting. It was a golden time of photojournalism, when magazines gave you the opportunity to immerse yourself in a story, to get to know your subjects, and create imagery that truly reflected their lives. One day, the writer and I paid a visit to a charming couple in their Augsburg apartment. They graciously shared with us the story of their daily routine, now that they were both 90, starting with the husband retrieving the local newspaper from the mailbox and then spending a couple of hours together in bed catching up on the latest news while enjoying each other’s company. The image of them in their cozy bedroom would not leave my mind - I knew I had to capture it. So, I asked them if they would be okay with leaving their door unlocked the next morning so that I could quietly sneak in and honestly document the moment.
