Working graveyard shifts til 6 AM, driving me from East Van to West Van to sports school, than picking me up at noon to take me to skating practices and to all my doctor and physio appointments in between. My dad saw that I had a passion and a dream and did everything he could to financially support that dream no matter what sacrifices it took. Thank you, dad. My dad was incredibly tough on me in every facet of my life. He expected a lot from me and although I didn’t see it or appreciate it at the time, I can now see how much this shaped me into the person I am today. My strength, determination, grit, competitive nature, and drive comes from his desire to see me succeed. He helped me turn my fears and weaknesses into my strengths. Thank you, dad. With that said, the person I was most terrified to come out to was my dad. So scared that it took me 17 years to do it. But at the end of the day my dad loves his family more than anything in this the world and all of my fears turned to dust when he took me in for a hug and told me that all that matters to him is that I am healthy and happy. Thank you, dad. I am so proud to be the son of an immigrant man. An immigrant man who played rugby for his country before moving to Canada with almost nothing to his name but driven by the aspiration to give his future family a better life than the one he had.
