Who is this woman? What and how is she Malaysian? I was studying at @ktjschool in Malaysia at the time and was just intrigued by the fact that someone local has made it to a global franchise. At that time it was rare, especially for someone from my neck of the woods, South East Asia. My fascination then continued from there on end. There was not a Michelle Yeoh movie I missed. I watched Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon half a dozen times. I loved Chinese movies but I never watched any contemporary ones but thanks to Michelle, I made sure I had the subtitled version of her movies Silver Hawk. Needless to say, I was a fan. Fast forward to her sitting to me next at the Andrea Bocelli concert dinner in Singapore in 2010. How is this happening?!I had a million questions but it really just was not the place. I was simply delighted to be in her presence. This was someone who really knew how to have fun! It didnt matter that she'd been in movies when I was just born, she felt younger than I was at the time. Her energy was infectious, and she was just like a hip Malaysian Auntie that was too cool to ever be my real aunty. No offense to my aunties ✌🏾#neverpastyourprime The next 12 years Michelle has been in countless movies and series making her the first Asian Actress to be loved and recognised by audiences globally. In 2018, I made a move to the US to take some theatre courses and lo and behold, an all Asian cast movie was being produced starring Michelle. A few days prior to the premiere we celebrated her birthday with the whole cast. The hope was that this production would transform the scene for Asian Actors in Hollywood forever. And so it did! Crazy Rich Asians grossed over $230 over million globally. In 2020 Parasite won 4 academy awards. An Asian film, nominated in 6 categories winning 4. Last week, @theacademy announced the Best Actress in a Leading Role, Dato' Michelle Yeoh. What more can I say.. a cultural shift is happening right before our eyes!
