I was with Dad when he purchased this @マックパック Pursuit backpack in 2000. I was 15. I'd seen the pack in a catalogue a couple of years earlier – the top-of-the-range alpine pack – worn by a famous mountaineer on the summit of an impressive Himalayan peak. I'd always dreamt of climbing in the Himalayas, so I knew I needed this pack.
Initially, the backpack was for Mum. As a growing lad, however, it was ideal for me too – a fact I was most delighted with. Because I used it more than Mum, I eventually took it over as my primary adventure backpack until 2015.
Even though I don't use it that much anymore, this pack means a lot to me. In fact, it's more than just a pack.
In my early years, this pack opened up my world, accompanied me on many adventures and enabled me to pursue my dreams of tramping and climbing. Sometimes parts broke, I made repairs, the pack lived on, and I continued to dream of taking it further.
But then something broke in me, and I became very unwell. By my mid-twenties, I depended on a mobility scooter to get around outside and was diagnosed with a neurological disease.
In time, I began the multi-year rehabilitation journey back into the outdoors, repairing the damage caused by the disease. As I took my first faltering steps back into the wilderness, this pack was with me. Slowly, I took it further and higher, always dreaming of more. And then I began to wonder: why not pursue my childhood dream, however impossible, and attempt a Himalayan peak?
In 2015, I reached the top of Imja Tse (6,160 metres) with an NZAT Pursuit – an updated version of my original pack. I could hardly believe it.
For me, it's more than just a pack because it represents my life's journey. Sometimes we break and make some repairs, but the key is to live on and continue dreaming.
