デヴィッド・ボウイさんのインスタグラム写真 - (デヴィッド・ボウイInstagram)「BOWIE THING – #194 - BOWIE’S FIRST US TOP 20 SINGLE “Lift off...” Fifty years ago this week, the 1973 RCA reissue of David Bowie’s Space Oddity 45 in the US entered the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100 at #20. Released in January to promote the recently reissued Space Oddity and The Man Who Sold The World albums (with the title tracks of each), the single took almost three months to reach its eventual peak of #15. The first advert in the trade press (see cartoon: image 8) appeared in January but wasn’t particularly Bowie flavoured. RCA really didn’t seem to be reading the room for that one. This oversight was corrected for the next advert in February with the familiar Ziggy Cosmic Yob ad (image 2), which was also used to promote the BOWIE US TOUR II, an example being the tour poster reproduced here (image 6). Image 4 is the US sheet music cover and the single sleeve. The remaining images (1, 3, 5, 7, 9) are all stills from @therealmickrock’s video, shot with haste in New York on 13th December to promote the single. I ONLY HAD A FEW HOURS FOR HIM AS I HADN’T YET FINISHED PACKING THE HUGE TRUNK THAT ACCOMPANIED ME ON ALL MY NAUTICAL TRAVELS.
