But once a year I get chills being in the room where it happens where we have to duke it out #12AngryMen style deciding the names of the nominees who will get the final votes from the members. In a weird comparison it’s like the first day of school or (jail?)—-you don’t know anybody & you are trying to figure out who your squad is. In my FIRST minute of our near Illuminatiesque undisclosed meeting place this old guy walks straight up to me and starts singing my dad’s lyrics “I sit in my room looking out at the rain……” & just goes in on how my dad was a hero to him & how he grew up on his music in the 50s. So naturally he was instantly my “guide” on how this place is ran & suddenly deciding the future of a rock legend didn’t seem that scary anymore. Seymour Stein passed away yesterday at the age of 80. I never met a record dude like him ever. Every story I ever wanted to know he was more than happy to oblige me with all of its sordid details. Him giving me a play by play on how #ColdSweat changed dance culture back when he was Syd Nathan’s apprentice at #KingRecords in 1966 just when #JamesBrown was REALLY about to show us a revolution. But man story after story after story (he was shocked I knew #ClimaxBluesBand ——and not “Couldn’t Get Right” CBB but like obscure breakbeat A Lot Of Bottle/Rich Man era CBB—-which instantly told him we speaka the same language)——-him being the architect of the Hot 100 on Billboard or him being in the Brill Building when “My Boyfriend’s Back” is being crafted. And of course as the proprietor of @sirerecords he was ahead of the curve in the acts he signed: Ramones, Talking Heads, The Smiths, Pet Shop Boys, The Pretenders, Men Without Hats, KD Lang, M (my fav song ever is Pop Muzick) Echo & The Bunnymen, Ice T & of course Madonna…. He never wasted a second in feeding me all the stories I ever wanted to hear about acts he signed or who he missed out on (Hendrix 🙄) —-imma miss the guy. Rare cat. Rest in Melody.」4月4日 1時28分
