Reposted @lordrarerock IT’S SO GOOD - Led Zeppelin perform “The Ocean” live at Madison Square Garden (1973). Page, Plant, Bonham and JPJ rounded off the freshly minted 50 year old masterpiece ‘Houses of the Holy’ with a love song dedicated mainly to their fans who had followed them from their earliest days. The “ocean’s roar” refers to the ocean of fans at their evergrowing shows. Plantation also adds a loving gesture to the then 4-year old heroine in his life - his first born child, Sweet Carmen Plant.

The song starts with John Bonham shouting: “We’ve done four already, but now were steady and then they went one…two…three…four…” Bonzo is referring to the four takes they had just recorded, but ultimately didn’t work out. The combined 4/4 and 7/8 time signature made the positioning of the riff rather tricky for the boys. Jimmy Page once described the typical scenario that would end up with Bonzo delivering this type of comic introduction, as he had done on “Out on the Tiles” (LZIII): “He would just get drunk and start singing things like what you would hear in the beginning of ‘The Ocean’”. Bonzo is also soley responsible for singing the harmonies on the a capella part of this song.

According to the lyrics printed on the inner sleeve of Houses of the Holy, the last line of the first verse is “Got a date, I can’t be late, for the high hopes hailla ball.” Some sharp-eared listeners heard something different, but just as enigmatic: “the hell high hella ball;” while others, meanwhile, thought they had heard “hellhound” in reference to “Hellhound on My Trail” by Robert Johnson, the legendary bluesman from the sultry Delta who, as the story goes, sold his soul to the devil in exchange for his incredible talent. Enjoy
