While his health deteriorated over the next six years living with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), this period was one of his most productive.⁠ ⁠ His movement into abstraction—in works that nonetheless address his experience living with HIV/⁠AIDS—countered the objectification of queer bodies in voyeuristic epidemic-related art and news campaigns. It also resisted polarized debates over sexuality and its representations.
