Woven completely by hand at our partner mill in India from 100% cotton, the fabric weighs in at 4oz/yd and features irregular thread tension for a soft, pre-broken in hand. . Like anything made by hand, handwoven fabrics carry within them a particular character that stems from the person who created it. Some of this character is tangible, some intangible, but it ultimately distinguishes them from machine made fabrics altogether. For us, that’s where these fabrics shine. . A cornerstone of this magic is thread tension. Because handweaving is an inherently imperfect process (no matter how skilled the weaver), thread tension varies slightly throughout the textile. And while tension doesn’t effect appearance, it has a surprisingly beneficial impact on how the shirts wear. . In short, irregular tension means an organic, pre-broken in drape. Unlike our Oxford cloth, for example, our Handwoven Dobby fabric isn’t strictly regulated on a rigid grid system. Instead, threads shift as the shirt is worn, conforming the shirt to the countless organic shapes that our bodies take. Plus, this even creates a slight amount of stretch! Ultimately, the effect is a garment that moves with you, not on top of you. . Equally as important to us is the skilled craftsmanship that goes into hand weaving this fabric. Despite being a practice nearly as old as the human race, hand weaving simply isn’t very common nowadays. It’s a slow and imperfect process that doesn’t lend itself to mass production. Lucky for us, we don’t mass produce! Thus, limited quantities of shirts were created and sizes are selling fast.
