The legendary Harry Belafonte has passed away at 96. An ASCAP member since 1956, Belafonte transcended racial barriers and topped the pop charts in the 1950s with hits like “Day-O” & “Jamaica Farewell.” His Calypso album was the first by a single artist to sell more than a million albums, and almost singlehandedly ignited a craze for Caribbean music. Belafonte also achieved major success as a film actor. But perhaps his greatest legacy will be his civil rights activism, which energized him throughout his life. Belafonte’s music, life and legacy will continue to be an inspiration for music creators for years to come.
