Recently we set off into NYBG’s Thain Family Forest—New York City’s largest remaining tract of old-growth woodland—for some hands-on work along the Bronx River to restore native habitat and maintain it for future generations. 🌲🌳

Hear from Eliot Nagele, Director of the Thain Forest, as he shares some of the efforts undertaken by Forest staff alongside volunteers from the @sierraclub. Together they worked to cut back invasive Japanese knotweed along the flood plains of the river, making room to plant new trees like pin oaks, sweetgums, and river birch. As these trees grow, their root systems will provide stability, reducing soil erosion as they replace woody plants lost during past storms.

It’s just one example of the hard work undertaken all year round to keep our 250 acres thriving.
