These were ordinary, familiar things, but also had an iconic, recognisable quality. This painting is one of a series that he began in the summer of 1960, overlapping the numbers 0 to 9 on a single canvas. Johns let the process of painting the number sequence lead its overall visual structure, instead concentrating on the qualities of the paint itself, exploring colour and thickness.
