One of three works from tonight’s Contemporary Evening Auction to sell above $20 million, Gerhard Richter’s ‘4096 Farben’ from 1974 sold for $21.8 million after a short bidding battle between 3 phone bidders at #SothebysNewYork.
The very last work in Richter’s celebrated Color Chart series, ‘4096 Farben’—which would also become the template for the artist’s magnificent Cologne Cathedral Window in 2007—set a new auction record for a work from this series, previously set at Sotheby’s in London when ‘192 Farben’ sold for $20.5 million in October 2022.
