Biden said the U.S. would provide American-made F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine, and train its pilots, in a move he had resisted. At the summit, Zelensky rejected Russia’s claim to have captured the eastern city of Bakhmut after nearly a year of fighting there, while he acknowledged that there was little left of the city. Full control of Bakhmut would be Russia’s most successful battlefield advance since last summer, but in recent days Ukrainian troops have broken through Russian defensive lines on the outskirts of the city. Controlling Bakhmut would not necessarily help Moscow toward its larger stated goal of conquering the whole eastern region of Donbas.
