Sandy Liang is a designer who draws inspiration from the layers of her childhood in 1990s New York City. These range from personal to universal, from nostalgic memories of Polly Pockets and Miyazaki to glimpses of cooks in aprons smoking behind restaurants, the patterned fabrics worn by grandmas shopping on Canal Street, and Renaissance paintings at the Met.

Liang grew up in Bayside, Queens, and studied fashion design at Parsons. She founded her company in the Lower East Side immediately upon graduating. The first Sandy Liang store opened in 2020 in the heart of Chinatown at 28 Orchard Street. Her studio is a few blocks away, she works intimately with a small team in a space that was once a storage room for her father’s restaurant. She names each piece thoughtfully after family, friends, and memories. There’s a sense of humor to her work; on her mood boards you can find a still from Will & Grace alongside a Caravaggio.

As a designer, Liang’s roots are in outerwear with an emphasis on structure and texture, but with a playfulness that recalls the comfort of winter coats on the schoolyard. Since her first collection in 2014 focusing on outerwear and aprons, each season has layered upon on the last. Her line has expanded to include skorts, fleeces, knitwear, dresses, and jewelry — all made with an acute attention to detail and the best materials. In 2022, Sandy released her first shoe to the world: the Mary Jane Pointe.
