#June is named after Juno, the Roman goddess of marriage, childbirth and fertility – her Greek equivalent is Hera.

Juno’s symbols are the peacock, the cuckoo and the cow – animals she considered sacred – and her chariot is pulled by peacocks instead of horses.

This 15th century enamelled mirror depicts a scene from Virgil’s Aeneid, where Dido, the Queen of Carthage, appeals to help from Juno. Dido’s husband Aeneas has deserted her – shown here as a small galleon sailing away in the distance – and she pleads for assistance.

Her heart broken, Dido goes on to stab herself with Aeneas' sword. Before dying, she predicts eternal strife between Aeneas' people and hers, which was seen as the mythical origin for the Punic Wars between Rome and Carthage.
