His recurrent manipulations of Chinese cultural artifacts juxtapose the tradition of its imperial history with symbols of the current phase of its modernization. "China Log" is built from ironwood, a wood traditionally used in Chinese furniture and was salvaged from a demolished Qing-dynasty temple. Ai repurposes the ironwood creating an 11-foot-long sculpture with the shape of the map of China running through the entire length.
