On January 7, 2023, 29 year old Tyre Nichols, was subjected to a traffic stop by a Memphis Police Department. Officers forcibly pulled Nichols from his car before macing and tasering him. Nichols broke free and fled toward his mother's house, which was less than a mile away. The five police officers caught up with Nichols near the house, where they punched, kicked and maced him, and struck him with a baton. Medics arrived on the scene but failed to administer care for 16 minutes after arriving. Nichols was admitted to the hospital in critical condition; he died on January 10, 2023.
