In this one-day itinerary, you can learn about the coastal area of Fukushima, which was severely hit by the disaster, and how its residents have strived to preserve their hometowns in the face of unimaginable challenges. 1️⃣ This model route starts at the JR Futaba Station, which is directly accessible from Tokyo Station (JR Hitachi Limited Express train bound for Sendai, get off at Futaba Station: 3 h, 15 stops, covered by the Japan Rail Pass). You can either rent a free bicycle (100-yen deposit system) at the station or walk around the town. You’ll notice murals paying homage to the residents and traditions of Futaba town, an initiative known as the Futaba Art District. 2️⃣ From there, you’ll visit the Great East Japan Earthquake and Nuclear Disaster Memorial Museum, which has a detailed account of the area before, during, and after the disaster. At the museum, you’ll learn about the stories and testimonies of locals, as well as their plans and ideas for the future. 3️⃣ The last stop is the remains of Ukedo Elementary School in Namie Town. Thanks to the swift action of the staff, all students and teachers managed to evacuate safely before the tsunami hit Ukedo Elementary School, located 300 m from the ocean. The building shows just how powerful the tsunami was, and was preserved to teach visitors about disaster preparedness.
