Today is #FlagDay, marking the adoption of the flag of the United States in 1777. What have the stars and stripes meant for people across the nation's history?

In the early reservation period, nearly 100 years after The Flag Resolution, the U.S. government outlawed the Lakota’s annual Sundance and other ceremonies and instituted Fourth of July celebrations in its place.

During this time, American flag interpretations became popular beadwork motifs, denoting particular meanings to different artists, families, and sovereign nations, including military service, special events, or the establishment of reservations.

Practical and beautiful, such bags were used to transport belongings and also ornamented the inside of lodges and tipis.

As we commemorate Flag Day, we invite you to reflect upon the many meanings and expressions associated with our nation's symbol. This Tipi Bag serves as a testament to the intricate interplay of art, history, and cultural identity, reminding us that within the complex tapestry of American heritage, there are stories that continue to unfold.

⭐ Unidentified Lakota/Teton Sioux artist, possibly made in North or South Dakota, United States. Tipi bag, ca. 1890. Tanned leather, glass beads, metal cones, horsehair, and dye. @metamericanwing
