Filipino American Karyn Cruz (@wanderlust_773) spoke to HuffPost about what it meant for her father, Dan, to enlist in the U.S. Navy at 19. “He wasn’t just looking for a job, he was looking for the best option to ensure a good future,” said Cruz.

While he had to leave loved ones in the Philippines behind, Dan’s decision granted him the opportunity to be a naturalized U.S. citizen and to attain the American dream. He was commissioned as a naval officer and served honorably for 30 years.

During that time, he returned to the Philippines and proposed to the love of his life, Jovy. “He never forgot about my mom,” said Cruz, whose parents had to work hard to keep their family, which included her two siblings, together even when her dad had to be deployed for months.

“Sometimes I wonder what my life would have been like if he didn’t make that decision to join. I am so proud of my dad for all his accomplishments and am thankful for it every day.”

Watch the video to learn more about their family’s journey and how it shaped Cruz today.
