“Everywhere I worked, I was the only black person.”

Carmen Munroe is one of 10 pioneering members of the Windrush Generation who have had portraits commissioned by His Majesty The King to mark 75 years since the arrival of the HMT Empire Windrush on British shores.

Born in 1932 in Guyana, Carmen went on to become a well-known actor on stage and television in the UK, with credits including Doctor Who and the Channel 4 comedy Desmond’s.

The artist Sonia Boyce OBE has created a portrait of Carmen, which along with the other nine artworks, will become part of the Royal Collection.

They are all featured in the fascinating new BBC documentary, Windrush: Portraits of a Generation.

Follow the making of the Windrush portraits, as artist and sitter come together to share testimony and experience over this special commission by The King.
