Chapter 3 – Humility
No individual is bigger than the team goes the saying!
‘Sweep the sheds’ is one of those mantras that has become ingrained in All Blacks folklore, a simple yet pivotal cornerstone of our culture that turns it from a merely good one to a great one. I always laugh when I hear it mentioned because it’s an example that’s been made such a big deal of. To us, it’s just something we’ve always done, of course, but it’s funny to hear it talked about as being the difference between a good culture and a bad one: ‘Ah, if we want a culture like the All Blacks then we have to sweep the sheds.’
We actually sweep the sheds because we want to. We’ve always done it. It’s a respect thing. It’s not because Steve Hansen is shouting, ‘Come on, guys, sweep the sheds!’ It’s the players that are really driving the environment.
Do you or your organisation have a Sweep the sheds mindset? Who drives your culture?
