Sir Peter Paul Rubens’ ‘Saint Sebastian Tended By Two Angels’ was last recorded almost 300 years ago in the collection of the artist’s great Genoese patrons, the Spinola family. When this painting resurfaced at auction 15 years ago, it was attributed to the French painter Laurent de la Hyre.

However, extensive archival research and X-ray technical analysis revealed the work to be a Rubens composition, as well as the prime version of a major work by the artist hanging in the Galleria Corsini in Rome.

It will be offered in the Old Master & 19th Century Paintings Evening Auction at #SothebysLondon on 5 July, and it’s on view to the public in our London galleries until 5 July as part of Masters Week—more details at the link in bio.
