According to the jury members of RIBA, photographer @finn and arts director Clare Purcell’s reimagined Welsh cottage – which recently won a slew of awards, including Building of the Year – has “the Goldilocks qualities of being neither too big nor too small, neither too formal nor too informal […] a sophisticated balance of prospect and retreat, light and dark.”

Having outgrown their cramped home in Hay-on-Wye, the couple enlisted the help of two Welsh architecture firms – @rural_office and @nidus.architects – to maximise space. They devised a single-storey extension that harnesses light and frames views of the unchanging landscape with all the creativity and care of, well, Finn himself. “Light is my job, really,” the photographer says.
