Seeing a truly dark sky can be a life-changing experience, as I have witnessed among many participants in my night-sky photography programs. Most people in the developed world live under light-polluted skies. There are now generations who have never seen the Milky Way. Light pollution is mainly the excessive use of artificial light that we don't critically need and the light wasted by spilling to the sky. It has a notable impact on biodiversity, human health, and energy consumption. The International Dark-Sky Association aims to reclaim our lost connection with the night sky by designating protected dark-sky places that generate sustainable revenue from astro-tourism for local communities. Worldwide there are about 250 of these sites. They are refuges for stargazers and nocturnal species.
