The snake’s curving body was carved over 500 years ago from a single piece of cedar wood. Turquoise tiles, as well as pieces of shell and coral, were then attached using an adhesive made of pine resin.  In Mesoamerica, serpents were associated with powers of regeneration and the ability to move between living and ancestral worlds. This piece was thought to have been worn on ceremonial occasions as a chest ornament.  🌊 Snakes were also associated with water due to their wave-like movements.
