A Birth Control Pill Will Soon Be Available Without a Prescription. Here’s What to Know.

The Food and Drug Administration approved a hormonal contraceptive pill to be sold without a prescription, making it the first and only birth control pill to be available over the counter since oral contraceptives were introduced in the U.S. in 1960.

The contraceptive is sold under the brand name Opill and produced by Perrigo Company. The decision, which was overwhelmingly supported by an array of medical associations, including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Medical Association, comes at a time when experts said that expanding contraceptive options to avoid unintended pregnancies had become more urgent in a country where access to abortion has become harder.
