Officials advised people in affected areas to avoid direct sun exposure from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.   The deaths of 61,000 people last year could be attributed to the brutal heat in Europe, according to one recent study, with children and older people especially vulnerable. The scorching temperatures have threatened the health of the elderly and pushed them inside, while governments are trying to take extraordinary steps to protect them.
