Fishermen call this reef Ghost Wave after the boat crews that got sent to the underworld by freak breakers coming out of nowhere. Locals believe in a scary underworld, ruled by a beautiful, spooky goddess named Matsu. Even on flat days, their boats loop wide, away from it. This reef is Matsu’s sacrificial altar.
