You can only imagine how trilled I was to photograph Tony Bennett. Being a lover of jazz and the American songbook in general, I was in the presence of royalty. What I remember so clearly was the camaraderie Tony shared with the members of his band. They were really tight that day, in the little studio he kept in his apartment. To hear that voice so clearly, up close, without a microphone was an extraordinary thrill.

The last time I saw him perform was at Radio City—at one point, he stood alone in the spotlight without musicians and sang “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” a cappella. That voice filled the whole theater—baring his soul in every note. Thank you, Tony, for your life of song, which defined so many moments for me and countless others.
