On this day in 1967, Best of The Beach Boys Vol. 2 was released. It was the sequel to the band’s first compilation album, rushed out after Pet Sounds the previous year. The album was compiled by Capitol Records quickly after Brian announced the shelving of SMiLE, after having spent the better part of a year working on it. The album only reached No. 50 on the charts and was not up to the challenge of the new psychedelic music, including The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Cream, Jefferson Airplane and The Jimi Hendrix Experience. A lost opportunity for SMiLE, which would finally see an official release by Capitol Records in 2011 as The SMiLE Sessions.
