On the 70th anniversary of the Korean War armistice, we revisit the work of @wernerbischofestate, who traveled to the region to document the conflict in 1951.

Korea had been divided at the 38th parallel following the Second World War, and repeated border clashes between the North and South culminated in the North’s invasion of South Korea on June 25, 1950. The war resulted in the loss of millions and the destruction of most major cities, standing as one of the most devastating conflicts of the 20th century. No formal peace treaty was ever signed, and South Korea and North Korea are, technically, still at war.

In a letter to his wife, Rosellina, detailing his first impressions of Seoul, Bischof wrote, “Among these ruins, the press center shone as the sole lit block, hundreds of journalists. It seemed to me as if we were vultures on the battlefield, always out for the sensationalistic…”

Shaped by a considered approach to reporting and his artistic background, Bischof sought to go beyond the sensational images strewn across newspapers’ front pages and expose the suffering of civilians caught up in this war.

Bischof's work in Korea was published in @life magazine in 1952.
