Vincent van Gogh was fascinated by cypress trees—in fact many of his most beloved paintings feature cypresses front and center. 🌳 ✨

He even painted these two similar paintings just months apart, both showcasing cypresses and a wheat field.

July 29 marks the 133rd anniversary of his death, and his funeral was a fitting tribute to his enduring fascination with cypresses. As an obituary reported, his casket “disappeared under branches of cypress trees and bouquets of large sunflowers.”

See both paintings—on view together for the first time since 1901—in “Van Gogh’s Cypresses,” on view at The Met in New York through August 27. #VanGoghCypresses #CypressSaturday

Both paintings by Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 1853–1890).
