In an essay for HuffPost, guest writer Allison Langer shared that she fought with her mom all her life — but then her tumultuous relationship with her own son made her rethink everything.
“For 55 years, my mom and I have been at each other — constantly poking the soft spots and picking at scabs. She judged and gave unsolicited advice. I sassed and spoke my mind, often hurting her feelings,” Langer wrote. “Looking back, I can see I wasn’t the easiest kid to love.”
Langer began experiencing this same dynamic with her youngest, 13-year-old Sloan.
“He rolls his eyes when I speak, lies to my face, and is mean like I was. I’m short-tempered and angry around him. I criticize his eating habits and judge his friends. … I don’t need to wonder what I did to deserve this child — I know. He’s just like me. Call it karma or call it genetics.”
After a psych evaluation, Langer learned that her son was struggling with real challenges.
