Our thoughts are with the Hawaiian people, especially those on Maui, in the aftermath of the devastating wildfires. Amidst the darkness, there is a glimmer of hope—our team and the birds at the Maui Forest Bird Conservation Center are safe. This center shelters numerous endangered bird species, some of which are extinct in the wild.
Firefighters have contained a nearby active fire and plan to stay until the threat has passed. The strong winds have caused damage across the entire facility which required the team to evacuate some birds into other shelters. Though power has been out for 36 hours, we're thankful our emergency generators continue to operate.
Others have not been so fortunate, and our hearts go out to the Maui community as crews continue to battle the fires.
